On August 28th – 29th, 2018 under support of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD), China Integrated Waste Management NAMA project (IWM NAMA) successfully organized a workshop on Low-Carbon Integrated Waste Management in Suzhou, one of the 5 project demonstration municipalities.
The workshop attracted over 150 participants including representatives of the government, academia and industry from various sectors such as waste management, environmental protection and low-carbon development. Ms. Tong Guichan, Director of International Science and Technology Cooperation Division, Department of Urban Development of MoHURD, Mr. Xiao Jiaobao, president of CAUES, Ms. Vicky Pollard, First Councilor of Environment and Climate Change of EU Delegation to China, Mr. Zhao Jinlong, Director of Suzhou Environment and Municipal Administration Bureau and Mr. Qian Mingyu, project director of IWM NAMA, jointly gave start to the workshop.
The two-day event welcomed the leading Chinese and international experts working in the areas of waste management and climate change. The topics covered during the workshop included: Best Available Technologies (BAT) / Best Environmental Practices (BEP) in solid waste management; current challenges in the waste sector; newest policy frameworks; latest scientific findings; creative solutions; international cooperation etc. All of these topics were intensively discussed by the participants.

Site visit to Suzhou Qizishan landfill
As one of the highlights of the workshop, a site visit to the Suzhou Qizishan landfill was organized by IWM NAMA. There, Dr. Joachim Clemens, professor of the University of Bonn, presented and demonstrated how to measure methane emissions at a landfill using the infrared gas camera.
The workshop was highly praised by the participants and proved itself as a suitable platform for the Chinese waste sector stakeholders to exchange on and better understand the political frameworks, the technologies and the financial conditions necessary for establishing low-carbon integrated waste management.
